A client’s style guide contains required format guidelines that each client asks for in order to make sure that their articles are consistent. A style guide contains things like whether or not to italicize a movie title or put it in quotes, and whether or not to include numbers in each list heading. Make sure you check the style guide every time before you begin writing -- it will be different for each client we work with.

Seriously, though, how important is it to check the style guide?

It is the first thing you should do whenever you claim a new assignment. It’s not quite as important as writing a good article, but how are you going to do that if you don’t know what the style guide says?

I don’t feel like checking the style guide

An editor or publisher will probably keep sending back the assignment for revisions until you do. Trust us! Check the style guide every time!
